US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke to Prime Minister Kiril Petkov.
“The United States has agreed to: a Strings Company of vehicles – a strong signal to our allies.” This was announced by the Prime Minister Kiril Petkov after meeting the US Secretary of Defense.
“The company is under the command of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief for Europe and we will propose that its commander be a Bulgarian.” Petkov added.
The issue of sending troops to Ukraine was not discussed, Kiril Petkov stressed.
Right now we’re just talking about humanitarian aid, a common strategy, strengthening the eastern flank. A decision on military aid is not possible at this stage and can only be made by the National Assembly, he said Kiril Petkov in answer to a question.
Prompted to do so by BNT Lloyd Austin whether there were discussions about sending military power to Ukraine, such as air defense systems, he said the talk focused on efforts to strengthen the eastern flank.
“We thank you Bulgaria for being a framework state of a combat group here. Thank you for your efforts” added Austin.
“I want to thank the United States Secretary of Defense for the real support from the Allies Bulgaria at this critical time. Unfortunately, there is no longer a country that can live with the illusion of perfect security. Our security consists in collective defense with our NATO allies. We are NATO” stressed Prime Minister Kiril Petkov.
The Bulgarian government has a clear task to strengthen our defense, Petkov explained.
Other highlights of the conversation included military mobility – from the Mediterranean Alexandroupolis – Burgas – Varna – Constanta by road, railway line, Danube bridge, Petkov added.
“Russian aggression has united NATO and Europe. We are very impressed by the courage and determination of the Ukrainian people. Your struggle is critical to the international order and the values shared by the United States and Bulgaria Split”, Lloyd Austin called.
“I have personally seen these values reflected in the warm welcome we received.
“We applaud your attempts to send humanitarian aid to Ukrainian citizens,” Austin added.
He stressed that a very important step is the creation of a NATO multinational team and that our partnership has never been stronger.
