There is something for everyone in Bulgaria. If you are currently feeling the cold of winter and dreaming of having the perfect summer 2022, Bulgaria should be at the top of your travel destination hit list.
Since the Black Coast stretches across the entire 378 km long eastern border of the country, there are numerous options for the ideal beach holiday for everyone. We have compiled a list of the best areas for you, whether you want to party hard or just relax.
Party hard on Sunny Beach
The aptly named Sunny Beach is your go-to place if you want your summer vacation to bubble with cocktails, dance tracks and cool waves.
One of the most popular holiday resorts in Bulgaria, Sunny Beach, is one of the cheapest party locations in Europe. Along the main street you’ll find vibrant clubs with some of the best up and coming techno and house DJs in Europe. Surrounded by stunning natural dunes, it is also one of the most picturesque beaches in the country.
The 8 km long beach and the sea of Sunny Beach not only offer nightclubs. Stay active during the day with boat parties and water skiing.
If you are fed up with the party lifestyle, it is also perfectly located for a cultural break. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nessebar is just a few kilometers south of the beach.
Nessebar is an ancient city full of historical sites. As a major trading port, it has risen and gone down several civilizations, from the ancient Greeks to the Byzantine Empire. You can witness the relics of these long-gone cultures through the preserved city walls and churches.
Romantic prospects at Balchik
The calm sand of Balchik calls for something quieter. Still undiscovered by the mass vacationers, Balchik is only 31 km north of Varna, the largest port city on the eastern border.
It is so nice that Queen Marie of Romania fell in love with the area in the 1920s and 30s and had a palace built. The castle is home to places that cannot be missed, including the Botanical Garden: the terraced gardens are divided into breathtaking collections of unique greenery and over 2,000 plant species can be found there.
After a stroll through the idyllic palace and gardens, a romantic evening also includes a visit to one of the wonderful beach bars and restaurants that line the 2 km long stretch of beach in Balchik.
Camping retreats for nature lovers
Partying too exhausting? Romantic getaways too cheesy? Instead, go rugged and camp on a beach. While wild camping isn’t possible everywhere, there are still plenty of beaches with designated campsites where you are more than welcome.
If you’re looking for a more secluded spot, Silistar Beach is the place for you. Here is a place for those who are ready to go a little off the beaten path for their summer vacation. Right at the southern end of the coast, Silistar has campsites and is also not far from several other beaches that you can visit when the main beach gets too crowded.
To get a taste of the wildlife of the Black Sea, Irakli Beach is the perfect destination and a must for nature lovers in search of unique flora and fauna. Not to mention the golden sandy beaches and wooded slopes that make the rugged coastline even more breathtaking.
And with many different camping options around the beach, it is possible to explore Irakli au natural. Sorry, didn’t we mention there is a nude beach?
Family fun in Golden Sands
If you’re bringing your youth with you during your sun break, nude beaches and nighttime DJs might not be your thing – so why not try one of the country’s beach resorts instead.
Golden Sands is one of the most popular seaside resorts in Bulgaria and is only a few kilometers north of the Black Sea capital, Varna. For older children, the historical sites of Varna will add to the vacation as you discover the ruins of the thermal baths from the 2nd century AD, where the ancient Romans bathed.
At Golden Sands Resort, the beaches offer a wide variety of water sports activities and there are family-friendly boat parties that can be booked.
No family trip to Golden Sands is complete without a visit to the water park. Like family-friendly beaches in Bulgaria, water parks are a must for kids with exciting slides and attractions that are suitable for everyone from the youngest kid to the older adventurous ones.
