The search for a possible arsonist continues after the nurse’s car burns in Westlake

A nurse is hoping the public can help identify the man who set her car on fire in Westlake.

“My colleague asked if I was parked in the south parking lot,” said Sofia de la Rocha. “I said yes, and he said, ‘I think your car is on fire.'”

Workers at the Country Villa Rehabilitation Center on Alvarado Street discovered the burning Volkswagen Tiguan as de la Rocha finished her shift on Monday.

“I just felt hurt. I was sad, angry and shocked when I saw my car explode,” she said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to put out the fire, but de la Rocha “immediately thought someone had set it on because it had been parked there for eight hours.”

Surveillance video confirmed their instincts as a person was seen walking to the right front tire before setting something on fire, dropping it and walking away moments before the fire started to grow.

De la Rocha said she doesn’t think she has enemies who would do so, and LAFD told KTLA the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined and as of Friday there were no suspects.

Instead of being angry at the apparent arsonist, de la Rocha said she felt for him.

“I hope he’s okay because obviously there’s something mentally wrong with that person, and I work with people like that a lot, so I just hope he’s okay and don’t do that to anyone else,” she said.
