Maryland Deathfest 2022 could be the final year of the annual extreme metal festival, organizers revealed in a statement saying the 2023 edition would not be moving forward. Instead, the festival is interrupted.
However, Maryland Deathfest XVIII will still be held May 26-29 in Baltimore, Md., the event’s home base since the first Deathfest was held there in 2003. This year will be the first since it canceled 2021 and 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 absent pandemic. Bands planned include Carcass, Dismember, Obituary, Hellhammer, Hypocrisy, Triptykon, Violence, Mortician, Blood Incantation, Graveyard, Acid Witch and many more.

“We are sorry to announce that we will not be organizing any festivals at all in 2023, including Maryland Deathfest,” its founders Ryan Taylor and Evan Harting said on April 9. “There’s a possibility that 2022 could be the last edition of MDF, but we can’t determine that one way or another right now.”
They added, “We’re taking a break and during this much-needed break we’ll decide whether the festival will return in 2024.” They also addressed the “many variables” that could affect that decision.
Metal events associated with Maryland Deathfest include UK Deathfest and Netherlands Deathfest, both of which have installments scheduled this year. For more information on the Maryland Deathfest, click here.

Maryland Deathfest Statement – 9. April 2022
STATEMENT BY THE FOUNDERS OF MDF:
As we continue to work diligently on the long-awaited 18th edition of MDF, which will finally take place next month, we would like to share some thoughts on the future of MDF with you.
We are sorry to inform you that we will not be organizing any festivals at all in 2023 including the Maryland Deathfest. There’s a chance that 2022 could be the final release of MDF, but we can’t tell one way or another at this time. What we can say now is that we are taking a break and during this much needed break we will decide whether the festival will return in 2024. There are many variables at play that will influence the decision to potentially bring it back in 2024, including the state of the world and whether we have the ability to put other things in our personal lives on hold to give the event the kind of attention it deserves give, which it has always needed and received.
When we started planning the first edition of MDF 20 years ago, we never imagined that all those years later we would still be doing it. We’ve put so much time and energy into making MDF what it is and we’ve never stopped. Given the grassroots nature of the event, it’s a miracle we’ve made it this far. In addition to the typical stresses and challenges over the years, these last 2 years in particular have added so many extra elements of surprise and uncertainty that have contributed to the exhaustion of it all and have led us to this decision to take a break. Simply put, our minds and bodies need a break and we hope everyone can understand and respect this decision.
We understand how much this event means to so many of you and we are aware that this news can be quite disappointing, but at the same time we hope that we have given you countless positive memories and the opportunity to make new friends while attending the MDF to close over the years. We appreciate every single person who ever supported and attended the event because without you we wouldn’t have made it this far. We’re just a bunch of guys who got into extreme music in middle and high school over 25 years ago and wanted to support the music we love and never thought MDF would morph into a cultural institution that thrives on 700 bands from nearly 40 countries took the stage.
Based on this news, you should definitely benefit more from your experience at MDF this year than you already planned. If you were hesitant to go, perhaps now is the time to side with participation as the future is uncertain.
We look forward to finally seeing you all again next month and will be providing you with more information about this year’s event soon.
