Vergara in the upcoming Netflix limited series

“‘Griselda’ is inspired by the accomplished and ambitious Colombian businesswoman Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history,” Netflix told TODAY in a statement alongside the first look photo. “A devoted mother, Blanco’s deadly mix of charm and unexpected ferocity helped her navigate adeptly between family and business, making her widely known as ‘Godmother’.”

Griselda was officially announced by Netflix in November 2021, with Vergara set to star and serve as executive producer on the limited series. According to the series’ press release, “Griselda,” which Vergara spent eight years developing, will consist of six 50-minute episodes, all directed by Andrés Baiz, also from Colombia.

Fans of the actress seemed excited about the new project and her transformation.

“She’s Gonna Eat This” said one person In response to the photo, Add, “Griselda kidnapped people for ransom when she was 11 years old. They better show ALL the crazies.”

Another person tweeted, “We’re coming to sweep the Emmys! Yass.”

Blanco – the infamous Queenpin at the heart of the series – founded and ran one of the most powerful drug cartels from the 1980s to the early 2000s.

Her life was portrayed in the 2006 documentary Cocaine Cowboys, and Catherine Zeta-Jones portrayed Blanco in the 2018 Lifetime biopic Cocaine Godmother. Back then, Zeta-Jones’ version of the Colombian character drew criticism when fans pointed out the actor’s Welsh background.

Zeta-Jones defended her role, telling Entertainment Weekly in 2018, “This happens to be the third Hispanic I’ve played. I played the lead in “Zorro” and did a screen test with six Hispanic women and got the part. I don’t know what to say.”

She added: “I also played a woman of Hispanic descent in ‘Traffic’. I have to take on (the roles) that I think I can play. I can’t be the person fighting a very big problem, and I won’t take on that role. There have been so many actors who have played “against type”. That’s pretty much what we do.”

According to Variety, Jennifer Lopez is currently working with STX Films on a biopic about Blanco called The Godmother.

Alongside the first look image of Vergara, Netflix also announced that Alberto Guerra, Vanessa Ferlito, Alberto Ammann, Christian Tappan, Diego Trujillo, Paulina Davila, Gabriel Sloyer, Juliana Aidén Martinez, Martin Rodriguez and José Zúñiga will star in the limited series become next to her.

Netflix has not announced a release date for Griselda.
