The Swiss-based energy company MET Group has acquired a 100 percent stake in a 60 MW wind farm in Bulgaria after signing a share purchase agreement with the Spanish Grupo Enhol. The transaction is an important step towards achieving the Group’s growth targets in the area of renewable energies in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region of 500 MW in operation by 2023. With this acquisition, the company expands its operational wind portfolio in Bulgaria to 102 MW.
On July 30, 2021, the MET Group signed an agreement with Grupo Enhol, a Spanish family company with a focus on renewable energies, to acquire their 60 MW Suvorovo wind farm in western Bulgaria along the Black Sea coast. The transaction is expected to close in the 3rd quarter of 2021.
The Suvorovo wind farm, which accounts for 8.5% of the total installed wind capacity in Bulgaria, consists of 30 units of Gamesa G90 wind turbines – each with an output of 2 MW. The wind farm, which has been in operation since 2012, produces around 120 GWh / year of electricity and supplies electricity that is equivalent to the consumption of around 38,000 households.
The MET Group regards the growth of renewable electricity generation in the CEE region as the core of its business strategy. This transaction will give MET a strong local renewable energy presence in Bulgaria after acquiring the 42 MW Black Sea wind farm in early 2021.
Benjamin Lakatos, Chief Executive Officer of MET Group, commented on the transaction: “This is our second successful acquisition of renewable plants in Bulgaria as part of our CEE growth strategy of 500 MW in operation by 2023. Business in our core markets will add value to support the energy transition towards renewable energies. “
