U20 WORLD INTERVIEWS

Jorg Volk put on an impressive run at the U20 World Championships with a 3-2 win over 2022 Asian U20 champions Merey Bazarbayev of Kazakhstan in the 57kg finals. Volk collected all his points in the first third, conceded a step out and a takedown to lead 3-0 at the break. Bazarbayev received a point on the passivity clock and an undershirt pull, but it wasn’t enough and Volk secured the belt to give USA a great start to the night.

Ben Kueter ended the night for USA Wrestling with a massive win in the 97kg final over 2021 World U17 Champion Rifat Gidak of Turkey. Gidak was first to hit exposure, but Kueter responded with his own exposure and worked his way up where he scored four Gut Keys before securing the pin. Kueter only needed 1:40 to win a World Championship gold medal.

at 70kg, Mitchell Mesenbrink takes silver at his first world championships. Mesenbrink was 7-2 behind at half-time in the final against last year’s European U20 champion Kanan Heybatov from Azerbaijan. In the second period, the two traded points, but Heybatov’s lead was too big for the American to win 13-7.

Vince Cornella lost a heartthrob in his 65kg bronze medal match to Yoshinosuke Aoyagi of Japan. With Cornella leading 3-0 at halftime, Aoyagi scored four straight points. With seconds remaining, the two got up until the last second. After reviewing the action, the final score was 6-6 for Aoyagi, who met the criteria for the points value.

Five Americans will compete in women’s freestyle on Wednesday, including Audrey Jimenez (50 kg), Adriana Dorado-Marin (55 kg), SaVannah Cosme (59 kg), Destiny Rodriguez (68 kg) and Tristan Kelly (76 kg).

WOMEN FREESTYLE DRAW
