Joe Manganiello shares the story of his meeting with Sofia Vergara.
The actor stopped by SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show to promote his new series Moonhaven and also shared how he’s been following his now-wife, Vergara.
While the two actors spotted each other in Hollywood in 2010 and even shared awards at the same MTV Music Awards show, it wasn’t until the 2014 White House Correspondents Dinner that the pair were properly introduced.
At the time, Manganiello admitted he was interested, but Vergara was engaged to Nick Loeb.
“Jesse Tyler Ferguson brought her to me and made her say ‘hello’ to me or something. I said hi, you know,” he recalled. “I was like, ‘You know, how’s it going? Like your fiancees over there, what are you doing right now?’ You know?”

Despite his interest, the actor was sure to keep a respectful distance.
“I mean, who wants to get into a fight in a tuxedo, you know? It does not look good. In the White House,” he explained. “‘Who invited this guy?’ ‘Oh Jess [Cagle] did. Right.’ Now it’s like a big scandal. So yes. I mean, it was like, ‘Okay, you know, yeah. The guy was there.’”
However, unbeknownst to everyone, the two actually broke up shortly after and Cagle had the scoop.
The True Blood actor shared, “But then Jess, you found out that she broke up with the guy at the time and you wanted to go public with it persons. And you emailed me saying, ‘We’re in -‘”
“Yes, I forewarned you,” Cagle replied.
Laughing, Manganiello admitted: “And I needed that. I had a head start.”
The two began secretly dating months later and went public with their relationship in August of the same year.

“So I flew to New Orleans and took her with me and it was a great first date. And I went back out to work the streets for a couple of weeks. And then, after those two weeks, I came back to New Orleans, but to see her again. And this time I would stay a week; See how that went,” Manganiello said.
Vergara was hesitant to jump into the relationship so quickly following their split, but the actor revealed he had a secret ace up his sleeve.
“And when I finally saw her the second time, I was like, ‘Look, maybe you must be single. And I understand that. Now I can’t promise you that I’ll be there at the end of your self-discovery process,'” he said. “‘But if you have to be single, I understand. I’ll take care of it. Life goes on.'”
At that point he put out an issue persons‘s magazine as a bargaining chip.
“‘But before you answer, wait.’ And I reached into my pocket and pulled it out persons magazine with me as the ‘number one bachelor in the world,'” he continued. “And I put it on the table and said, ‘Numero Uno.’ And then I pushed it across the table to her.”

The 45-year-old was named People’s Hottest Bachelor in 2014 shortly after they met.
However, Vergara had a hilarious reaction to Manganiello’s attempt to convince her.
“She took the magazine, started flipping through it, and I said, ‘You know, you’re skipping my interview. This is my article.’ She said, ‘Yeah, I want to see who else is on the list,'” he recalls, laughing.
It all worked out in the end as the couple tied the knot at a gorgeous wedding in Palm Beach a year later.
