BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 8th
This general assembly marked the election of the EOC authorities. I would like to congratulate Spyros Capralos (GRE) on his election as EOC President, said Farid Gayibov, European Gymnastics President, Trend Reports, citing his testimony.
“At the beginning of June I was part of the 50th General Assembly of the European Olympic Committee (EOC), which took place from June 10th to 11th, 2021 in Athens (GRE).
This general assembly marked the election of the EOC authorities. I would like to congratulate Spyros Capralos (GRE) on his election as EOC President. I wish Mr. Capralos and the members of the newly elected Executive Committee every success for the coming term of office.
European Gymnastics works closely with the EOC on the European Games and the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF). I am confident that our partnership will continue to be efficient and fruitful in the future.
From Athens I drove to Varna (BUL), where the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships were held from June 9th to 13th, 2021.
Bulgaria has a proud tradition in rhythmic gymnastics and organized the event perfectly. I would like to thank the Local Organizing Committee of the Bulgarian Rhythmic Gymnastics Association, headed by Ms. Iliana Raeva, for all their efforts that have led to successful competitions.
The gymnasts benefited from the conditions created by the organizer and took their last chance to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. For the first time, these competitions were also a qualification for the World Cup. I would like to congratulate the gymnasts on their brilliant performance at this event, which was attended by representatives from 37 countries. We have reached this number in the last few years, when gymnasts from countries with comparatively fewer gymnastics traditions have taken part in our events and continue to do so to this day. We are pleased because it shows the popularity of this discipline across the continent.
Another thing that made these championships unforgettable was the spectator stands in the Palace of Culture and Sports. It was electrifying to finally feel the atmosphere of eager fans cheering on their stars again. I’m sure our gymnasts were also happy about the loud applause and the support they deserved. We also had a lot of viewers for the live stream during qualification. All technical problems of the last European Championships were eliminated and 80,000 spectators were able to follow the competitions online. This fact also proved the popularity of rhythmic gymnastics, “he said.
“Another competition of the month was the World Age Group Competitions (June 23-29, 2021), followed by the Acrobatics World Championships (July 2-4, 2021) in Geneva (SUI).
These worlds were planned for 2020 but have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally the acrobatic gymnastics family was able to take part in these long-awaited events.
Since it is an event in a non-Olympic discipline, the acrobatics unfortunately did not have a high number of participants. We have already seen this in the previous and also in this year’s worlds of aerobics and acrobatics. One of the priorities of the newly elected FIG Executive Committee should be an activity plan aimed at promoting and developing these gymnastics disciplines over the next cycle.
Between the competitions we had a meeting of the Presidium and the Executive Committee of the European Gymnastics (June 18 & 19, 2021), unfortunately this time in online format. At our meeting in September, proposals for changing the technical regulations were discussed. One of these changes concerns changes in competition formats for European championships. We know that the Europeans in Rhythmic Gymnastics (from 2021) and Artistic Gymnastics (from 2022) are now qualifying events for the World Championships. The following changes should be reflected in the European Technical Rules for Gymnastics.
In addition, the 2020 annual accounts have been approved and 2 European championships have found their hosts. The 2023 European Championships in aerobic gymnastics and the 2024 European Championships in artistic gymnastics for men and women will be held in Antalya (TUR) and Napoli (ITA). I am confident that we will undoubtedly have good events in both cities.
Here we are – Tokyo Olympics qualification completed last month and we’re on the home stretch for the Games.
I sincerely congratulate all athletes who qualified for Tokyo 2020. Soon we will be immersed in the thrill of the long awaited games.
Good luck to all athletes in their final preparations! “He added.
