Bulgaria starts shipping basic foodstuffs to Montenegro

PODGORICA (Montenegro), March 31 (SeeNews) – Bulgaria has started shipping basic necessities to Montenegro to help the country make up for shortages caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Montenegrin media reported.

Several trucks with food provided by Bulgaria have already arrived, said the Minister of Agriculture of the public broadcaster RTCG, Aleksandar Stijovic, on Wednesday.

“Bulgaria has proposed to sell copious amounts of very high quality foodstuffs, including flour, grain and animal feed, to Montenegro under better conditions than Serbia,” Stijovic said.

Montenegro’s Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic said earlier this week that Bulgaria and Romania had indicated their willingness to help Podgorica make up for shortages of basic necessities caused by Russia’s war against Ukraine. “At the moment, Montenegro is most dependent on Serbia. It’s always good to have alternative solutions,” said Krivokapic on the sidelines of a meeting of the heads of government of the NATO member states in south-eastern Europe in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

Earlier this month, the Montenegrin government asked Serbia to allow certain quantities of vegetable oil, flour and wheat to be exported to the country and to help Podgorica secure basic necessities amid disruptions in supply chains caused by the war in Ukraine.
