What happens when you take a veteran Eurovision drummer, an “X Factor” winner, a Chilean rocker and wrap it all up with a driving beat and a positive message? Well, of course it’s the Intelligent Music Project and their song “Intention”!
Formed in 2011, the band boasts a fluid line-up of members who have worked with an absolute cavalcade of rock legends over the years, from Rainbow to Toto and Asia to Black Sabbath. The current line-up includes Santiago-born lead vocalist Ronnie Romero, backing vocalist and rhythm guitarist Slavin Slavchev (who wrote the Bulgarian edition of X factor 2014), guitarist Bisser Ivanov, bassist Dimitar Sirakov, keyboardist Ivo Stefanov and percussionist Stoyan Yankoulov. Ronnie puts it this way:
Intelligent Music Project was formed as a Bulgarian band, but the creator of the project began to bring together musicians from all over the world. I’m from Chile, lived in Spain and Romania and now I’m in Bulgaria… I’m like the spirit of the EU! For us it’s something pretty normal and natural.

A notable name on the band’s roster is Stoyan Yankoulov, who Eurovision fans may remember from his earlier songs at the 2007 competition water and 2013 samo shampooi, both together with the singer Elitsa Todorova. According to him, Eurovision evolves and changes, but it’s always welcoming.
I’m so happy! I’m just an ordinary drummer in this amazing band and I’m so surprised and excited as Eurovision keeps growing every year. There’s new music, new styles, new singers and it’s great inspiration! It’s a traditional singing competition, but it’s not just about staying in one place. It gets better every year. I’m feeling very comfortable at Eurovision…who knows, maybe next time I’ll come alone, just me and my drum kit!
The band has also been busy during the pandemic. Between continuing to record new music and conducting free concerts for medical professionals in Bulgaria, the music never stopped.
We felt the need to keep working and that as musicians we have a responsibility to bring happiness and joy to people even in difficult times. So we put on a series of shows, respecting the restrictions of course, with free COVID tests at the venue entrances. We thought it would be a good idea to play for free to give back all the hard work people have put in.
No matter who is in the line-up, one thing remains constant at Intelligent Music Project: a positive message. It’s a theme that runs through the band’s back catalog, which spans half a dozen albums released in the past decade.
With every song we want to give people a little bit of hope. The last few years have been tough for everyone, but we understand the responsibility musicians have to make people happy. We try to tell people that everything will be fine. We will change the situation we live in, but we must have the “intent” to do so!
