My daughter is now 11 years old, and while I can barely remember her childhood – I can’t tell you when she lost her first tooth etc – I do remember her Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Cardigan. And not because it’s cute and I’m a fashion designer (although it is and I am). It’s because raising a baby is difficult. So when you find the things that get you through time, you tend to remember them.
I picked one of these cardigans on a whim. I’d been walking a little unprepared (probably just with a clean diaper in my jacket pocket), and when the weather turned I went to a baby store in Soho called Giggle (now closed) and bought it.
In the end, I put it in there almost every day for the next year and a half. It was, I quickly found, sturdy and functional (far more than the name Barefoot Dreams CozyChic suggests). And although it’s made from a polyester microfiber, and I’m usually averse to polyester and microfiber fabrics, it actually feels very natural. In addition, it is just very soft, cozy and very, very absorbent. This last piece is important because it means the sweater doubles as a handkerchief – you can use it to wipe off all the drool and snot that goes on and on from a baby’s face. And it’s very, very easy to care for – you can just toss it in the laundry. It holds up too – it’s stretchy enough to get you through a few growth cycles. My daughter wore it from 6 months old until she was 2 months old (let’s just say it found a lot more use than the beautiful Bonpoint cashmere romper I got at my baby shower.)
All of this has made it my favorite present for new parents. I gave it to several of my friends when they were having babies around the same time – Sophia Coppola and her production designer, Anne, and Vicki Farrell, the costume designer for Amy Sedaris. You all loved it. And I recently got it for my brother and sister-in-law when their second child was born. They used it so often and it remained so completely intact that it was recently given to their third one.
