Team Azerbaijan celebrate best team result at European U-23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, March 13, 2022 / United World Wrestling
The wrestling team of Azerbaijan topped the team rankings in the medal table at the European U-23 Championships, held from March 7-13 in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.
Azerbaijani male and female wrestlers won a total of 16 medals including seven gold medals in the freestyle and Greco-Roman categories.
Ziraddin Bayramov, Dzhabrail Gadzhiev, Abubakr Akbarov and Islam Ilyasov took first place in the 65 kg, 74 kg, 97 kg and 86 kg categories of freestyle wrestling. At the same time, Nihad Zahid Mammadli and Khasay Hasanli achieved the same results in the 60 kg and 77 kg classes of Greco-Roman style.
In women’s wrestling, Zhala Aliyeva outclassed all her rivals in the 62kg category to claim a gold medal for Azerbaijan.
Besides gold awards, Azerbaijani athletes have won two silver and seven bronze medals in different weight classes in both men’s and women’s wrestling.
Azerbaijani wrestlers are now preparing for the upcoming European Senior Championship, which will be held from March 23 to April 8, 2022 in Hungary’s capital, Budapest. More than 400 wrestlers are expected to attend the tournament.
“For me, the European Senior Championship is more important now,” said Abubakr Akbarov, the European Under-23 Championship gold medalist, according to United World Wrestling’s official website.
“I feel like I can compete at a higher level. I hope to be the leader in this weight class by the Paris Olympics,” he added.
