Azerbaijan’s top-ranked men’s wrestling team took first place in the freestyle wrestling rankings of the 2022 European Wrestling Championships in the Hungarian capital Budapest this week.
The total prize count of Azerbaijani wrestlers included one gold, four silver and two bronze medals won in seven different freestyle wrestling weight classes.
Magomedkhan Magomedovitch won the gold medal for the country in the 97 kg category. Aliabbas Rzazade, Haji Aliyev, Ashraf Ashurov and Abubakr Abakarov took the silver medals in the 57 kg, 65 kg, 79 kg and 86 kg categories respectively. Turan Bayramov and Osman Nurmagomedov took bronze in the 74 kg and 92 kg classes.
In the end, the Azerbaijani wrestlers with 159 points crowned the European championship, in which national teams from 28 countries took part. Turkish and Georgian athletes followed the national team of Azerbaijan in the team standings of the tournament.
Recent success in Budapest brought the third European gold for senior freestyle wrestling team from Azerbaijan, who won the same award in Lithuania in 2009 and Serbia in 2017.
Meanwhile, in early March, the country’s national team topped the team rankings at the European U-23 Championship, held March 7-13 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
The ongoing European Championships 2022 in Budapest will end on April 3rd. It also offers tournaments in Greco-Roman wrestling and women’s wrestling.
