Both seeded players lost on Monday during the opening round of the Sofia (Bulgaria) Open of the ATP Tour.
Italy’s Gianluca Mager defeated sixth seeded Adrian Mannarino from France 6-3, 6-2, and Frenchman Benoit Paire defeated seventh seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina from Spain 6-4, 7-5.
Mager had lost his first round match in three of his past four tournaments, including the US Open. He saved the only breakpoint he faced against Mannarino. Paire, who ended a three-game losing streak with one defeat in the opening round in New York, ended up 11-1 at Assen against Davidovich Fokina.
In the only other game of the event on Monday, Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic defeated Bulgarian wildcard participant Adrian Andreev 7: 6 (7), 6: 4.
Brandon Nakashima, a native of San Diego, broke serve at the last point of the game to complete a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-5 win over Italian Fabio Fognini in the first round of his home tournament.
Nakashima, 20, ended with eight aces and only two double faults. Fognini made a double fault nine times and had only one ace.
Elsewhere in the opening round, the Russian Aslan Karatsev defeated the Argentine Federico Delbonis 6: 1, 7: 5. A high school product from San Diego, 23-year-old Taylor Fritz played the late game against Italian Salvatore Caruso.
