[100 Emerging Women Leaders] Meet Goa-based entrepreneur Varna Bhat. from the IAS candidate for brewing vodka


Varna Bhat is no stranger to startup. She had founded RapidStall, an environmentally friendly fabric brand, and Tessarakt experience – a marketing, event and creative house.

Once a conversation with a friend made her think of the Alco drink room and she discovered that there was hardly any typical drink in India.

This led her to found Blisswater Industries and a truly Indian vodka, Rahasya, in December 2020. The vodka made in Goa costs 850 rupees for a 750 ml bottle on the Goan market.

Varna says her venture into branding and entrepreneurship was a fortunate accident. In an effort to become an IAS officer, Varna was also the batch front runner and had started working at the age of 18.

Varna had already learned various professions during his MBA, including writing a doctoral thesis and selling SIM cards.

“We started a creative science course and I entered the world of marketing and branding. That was the basis for building my first startup, ”says Varna.

During her studies for her civil service examination, she worked for an organization with mentors from the world of brands.

A journey of the start

On the job, she previously spoke to several branding executives RapidStall founded in 2012. The company manufactured eco-friendly fabric brands made in Bengaluru and had sales offices in Delhi and Mumbai. The company also had manufacturing and sales departments in Dubai for the Middle East market.

A few years after RapidStall, she launched Tessarakt Experiential, which is still going strong. However, she also wanted to start in the field of alcoholic beverages.

“There were obviously naysayers and the usual ones with the prejudice why I choose this segment. It wasn’t a good place for women… ”, recalls Varna.

While Blisswater Industries was due to start work and Rahasya started in May 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns thwarted its plans.

It took time to continue building the brand and Rahasya was finally launched in December 2020. In fact, Varna made sure the team was ready with plans for the next year.

“I’ve traveled all over the country to find the right ingredients. Fortunately, it wasn’t a challenge for me to come from Goa and find the right production facility, ”says Varna.

The market for homemade distilleries and breweries is growing with the presence of companies such as Bira, White Owl, Makazia, and several others.

According to Goldstein Market Intelligence, the Indian alcoholic beverages market will grow at an annual rate of 7.4 percent to $ 39.7 between 2017 and 2030. Billion.
